Intuitive Eating Isn’t Anti-Plan

I saw a post recently where someone was saying intuitive eating isn’t for them because they felt like they needed more of a plan.

And this saddened me… because intuitive eating isn’t anti-plan.

But I see this message with intuitive eating that you can’t have goals, you can’t have a plan, because that’s too much like dieting.

But here are my thoughts… you can 100% have a plan and work towards goals AND eat intuitively.

The difference is all in your mindset and motivation as you create and carry out your plan and work towards your goals.

Almost every single one of my clients would say they are high achievers who love to follow a plan. This is me too, by the way!

And we thrive with having some structure!

But as I teach my clients, with structure, in order for it not to become controlling and restrictive, we also need flexibility.

THIS IS THE KEY TO CREATING A PLAN WITH INTUITIVE EATING AND IT NOT BECOMING ANOTHER DIET.

And, it’s the key to working towards your health goals in a way that’s consistent.

But I know how you think, and the struggle is with flexibility. You have thoughts like, “Well, how flexible is too flexible?” and “If I’m not 100% then I’m just going to stop altogether”.

This is the biggest struggle for people… finding that middle ground of structure & allowing for flexibility.

Allowing for the day when you hit snooze and don’t make it to the gym.

Allowing for the meal that you end up overeating and you didn’t want to.

It requires giving yourself grace. And that’s hard for people, especially if you’ve been conditioned by diet culture to think that shaming yourself is helpful motivation.

So… no, intuitive eating isn’t anti-plan. In fact, having a plan can HELP you work towards your health goals with intuitive eating. Just don’t forget to also add in that flexiblity.
