EBP Episode 65: Keto, Macros, & Intermittent Fasting

Keto, Macros, & Intermittent Fasting... these are all the rage right now. Maybe you have questions about these diets, particularly because they are often marketed as "lifestyles" and may seem totally harmless. We wanted to get into all the details about each of these popular diets and share both the research as well as our own, personal, thoughts on each of them.

For each of these diets, Katherine and I share the history of the diets, what they are, and things to know about them in relation to what we know about our relationship with food.

Something about these diets is that they are typically portrayed as not being diets, but rather "lifestyles". That's the language you'll hear a lot in today's culture because diet culture's caught on to the fact that diets don't work. But here's the deal, they are still diets. Any change that you make to how you eat that has rules about what you should and shouldn't eat with the main purpose of weight loss or controlling your body size is a diet.

The overarching message, I'd say, is that each of these diets is a slippery slope. Diets are portrayed in our culture as being completely benign and harmless, something that unites us--we decide to start them with our friends, and "the answer" to our dissatisfaction with our body.

But in reality, diets including these, are not harmless. They can be really dangerous both physically as well as mentally. Dieting is the number one cause of developing an eating disorder, which is nothing to mess around with.

Our hope with this episode is that it would empower you and educate you to take ownership of what you decide with each of these diets.
